There's a very nice "How to.." in the literature and manuals section.

And if you are going to do it, most of the vendors sell a rebuild kit. Personally, while not wishing to promote one vendor over another, I would spring for Kanter's deluxe rebuild kit. It has a few items that are not included in any of the regular kits.

While some may disagree, I'm a believer that the piston should be changed along with the other hydraulic items since the smallest bit of corrosion at the sealing point could cause a seal to leak. There have also been some instances where the leather vacuum piston cup was saturated with brake fluid & was gummed up. That is another item not in a regular rebuild kit. Unfortunately, even the deluxe kits do not contain any of the rubber parts for the vacuum section so you have to hope nothing has dried out there. The conical compensator valve spring is another item that is not included in any kit or available from any of the vendors.

When I rebuilt my BTV last year I used Kanters kit. I also replaced the piston, as recommended by HH56.
If you in addition use Ross's step by step rebuild manual, is should be manageable to do a rebuild yourself.
