A significant photo, unfortunately protected by copyrights, showing James J. Nance.

Description: Presentatives of the Studebaker and Packard Cooperations are shown in a three-way handshake at the Waldorf Astoria press conference where they announced the merger of the company today.

To me that photo is telling. Facially, I detect unease with Nance. The center fellow conveys a sense of smugness, as well as the fellow on the right. What did each really know at that moment?

I agree Guscha, the end of the road was visable through the fading light.

Just my impression.

Gerd, great find. It reminds me of Chamberlin and his "There will be peace in our time."

Kevin, John, thanks.
Don't know why but this thread is on the way to be a happy-merger-picture thread.

I've seen that Mason and Romney picture before. No hiding Mason's sense of what was to be, given his bearing and apparent demeanor. Exceeding hard to fake genuine excitement. Prior picture with Nance to me indicates he was ill at ease. Just an impression I would follow-up upon when I was in that different galaxy many moons ago trying to save the world around us.

Hi

That look of unease on Nance's face might be because he was suddenly wondering why Paul Hoffman and Harold Vance were so pleased to have just sold their corporation to Packard.

Their pleasure stemmed from knowing how immense and out of control their overhead and breakeven numbers were, problems they no long would really have to deal with. Now those problems were all in Nance's lap.

On the other hand, A. E, Barit too was also pleased to dump Hudson onto Nash-Kelvinator. But Mason and Romney had a better plan of how to integrate the most useful Hudson resources immediately into AMC, reason to smile.

I can't think of any benefits from Hudson. The AM line was pretty much Nash. I guess they got more dealers.

I believe that Hudson had a recently completed "State of the Art" Body Plant.
