The "1947" is a 22 series bathtub car. That ad has snookered me for weeks. I'm almost resentful.

I think that the '47 is a Super or a Custom. The front fender looks longer, there's the wolf whistle on the engine, and the distributor may be under that center freeze plug. Oh, and it has the belted thermostat housing. Good price - the left front fender looks decent. Wat needs three of them (and/or to get better at bodywork) and has one. Too bad it's 70% of the way across the country.


The 288 head is a nice tough.

Not very common to see a coupe hit the market. They did leave out the term "major collector." It does say, "1 of only 18 known survivors across the 2 years of production of this striking body style, this is a very rare and desirable car, that will only increase in value as the years pass."

That's a long time dealer, not a flaky flipper. I believe the Senior Clipper survivors are in the 20-30 range, but they are uncommon.

I saw a very good '47 4-door Custom for sale several months ago for $30K. Hell, even the funky clutch gizmo worked. They didn't keep it for very long.


The coupes seem to command a premium.

Europe is going electric at such a rate that I find it hard to believe these price bubbles can continue.

They had some farmer on the radio talking about how much he loves his electric F-150.

Here is the hidden problem: Oil companies have tremendous operating leverage as demonstrated by the small ones that went bust during the pandemic. Reducing demand for gasoline is going to cause those big oil companies to go bust. Then there is still the need for lubricants, chemicals, and plastics. So this whole electric craze is not rational. Neither is driving monster trucks and other gas guzzlers. So people are just crazy and in the long term society is doomed.

For the foreseeable future, trains, airplanes, and ships will burn petroleum derivatives for fuel, and petroleum is still needed for chemical processes (IIRC about 20% of petroleum demand is for chemicals/plastics, not fuel) so even if everyone switched to electric cars right now, oil would certainly not be unnecessary or unprofitable.

That misses the point of operating leverage. Refineries have a break even point and once you go below that losses skyrocket. They can't afford to have falling demand for any of their products.

Consider a slaughterhouse. They don't throw anything in the garbage. I knew a girl who worked in one and she never wore make up because she knew where it came from. If they throw away anything they start to fall below break even.

I have a few employees on my team based in India. A couple weeks ago, one of them had to drop a morning call unexpectedly. I inquired later what happened: "Sorry Mike, we have had rolling blackouts.. very bad heat wave and we have had to convert passenger trains to coal carrying." I guess when we ban petroleum countries like China will continue to make plastics and maybe we'll just stop manufacturing altogether and buy from them??

Two weeks ago I was helping a friend at his hunting property modify a shipping container to store his tractor (needed ventilation holes in sides). He bought some tinker toy battery powered cutoff wheels. I told him they didn't stand a chance.. sure enough two minutes in. I finally got him to go back to town buy a generator and some real tools, job done.

I'm not even going to go there with my boat.. guess I'll have to tow a flotilla of batteries.
