'51 Rear Axle Seal & Shims

The right rear axle seal is leaking on my 1951 200 Deluxe. Planning for the worst when I tear into it, I've bought brake cylinders and bearings with cups and have on order a rear seal kit (4 gaskets & 4 seals). Not wanting to come up short, I'm concerning about needing shims when adjusting or checking the end play.

I've been unable to find a source for shims. Can someone out there help me out?

You may find them available but it's almost just as easy to just buy some flat shim stock and make them yourself.

Besides, you almost never have to add shims. To get the end play right you are almost always subtracting.

OD & Ross,

Thanks for your inputs. You confirmed what I thought.

I found the axle vent was all plugged up, so I cleaned everything up and will wait to see if that fixed the issue. Otherwise I should have all the parts in a week or so and will tear into it then.

Again, I really appreciate your expert help.

Marty - The rear axle bearings are probably the most overlooked maintenance item in our Packards. Many have failed especially on tours. If the seals have been leaking bearing grease has been washed away and this will cause the bearings to fail sooner than later. Good idea to get in there and do a proper job. Just my unsolicited advice.

JW,

Thanks for the input. When I get everything I'll do just that.
