on the 34 1101-718 the bearings on the king pins are split with the ball bearings inside. when installing them witch way is up?

Excellent illustration in the parts list. To my knowledge the pins themselves and the ball bearings are NLA; there are some substitutes for the bearings though they required re-machining of the pin itself. There is at least one regular visitor to this site that's been thru this so hopefully he'll chime in with more details.

If your pins/bearings are worn you might check elsewhere for signs of neglect as, lubricated routinely, the pins and bearings should easily outlast several engine jobs before any wear is noticeable.
