Rebuilding a 39 Six with an overdrive unit in it. I found the Overdrive cutout cable to be frozen, so I disconnected and in the process of repairing. I attempted to move the lever on the overdrive unit by hand while under the car and found it impossible to move ( did not use any extreme pressure ). Should this move somewhat freely or does the engine need to be running to allow movement ??

Also, since I have been told that the overdrive is typically always engaged, is there any issue about not rebuilding the overdrive cutoff system. (relay and cable seem difficult to locate, condition of solinoid is unknown at this point)

Flackmaster or one of the prewar guys will have more insight on what is proper operation and how much you can do or not do on the unit but I just looked at a trans/R6 - (hard to read designation but think it says 1P) combo. Lever seems to have a definite detent at both positions which the R9 does not have but it does move -- Just guessing, the travel is about 2 1/2 inches at the end of the lever.
