Then 1940 Super noisy lifters. Still playing with the 356 engine and oiling issues. Have noticed lately, and greatly today that just about all of the motor oils available are synthetic. At Auto Zone, and O'Reillys, only one old fashioned oil available now!!! All now synthetic. So, if needed will need to change to synthetic. Proper proceedure? And what about ZDDP? And any other additives that might be deemed necessary? Or should I buy up ten years supply of the old fashioned stuff while available?

Bad news Tolandis, the SL spec oil was essentially "outlawed" in 2004 so finding any on the shelf is going to be a good trick.
There are a growing number of "vintage Spec" oils on the market including Hemmings & Joe Gibbs, Swepco, etc. Many engine builders sell it. A web search will give you days of reading. The good news is that a long broken-in cam with decades old valve springs, running at modest RPMs will likely last forever.

So, synthetic, or no? How does one change an antique engine to synthetic? Need to flush out, or just drain and change? Do these synthetic's need zddp, or marvel mystery oil additives?

Synthetic... Just drain and fill. Mixes with old oil fine.

Mobil 1 has the highest ZDDP levels of any of them. I researched this before I used it in my rebuilt V8, I used nothing but Mobil 1 synthetic and assembly lube and no issues.

I recently put it in my 1970 dart swinger and when I drained it to redo the oil pain gasket... Oil was perfect and clean.

Rikki, the link does not work, not found. The synthetic Mobil 1 I think is available locally, as is the Rotunda, both synthetic. Can still add ZDDP and Marvel Mystery Oil, occasionally?
Thanks all.
I will order some of these on line, but with three Packards, sometimes just get the urge to do an oil change and need some from the local parts store.
With these synthetics what grade is best. Live in Las Vegas this week around 112, in a few months 52.

Synthetic motor oil is great for many engines, but does it not seep through the rope seal on the rear mail bearing of the V8 engines? An Amsoil distributor I met says no, but I'm a little leery of a non-tech supplier's knowledge.
