Rear End Backlash

upon tear down, I found what I feel is excessive backlash in the rear end. If I turn the yoke, I get 1/8 to not quite 1/4 slop before the wheel will engage. Same if I spin the wheels, lots of movement before the yoke will move.

Opening the rear end and removing the Axles, there is zero backlash between the pinion and the ring. this is good, I thought I might need to shim. There is zero wear on the gears, good so far.

I do find with the axles removed, I have slop in the differential gears in terms of them being able to wiggle in the carrier. With the axles back in, I have the same slop/movement, in the differential gears and an audible gear noise when spinning.

Should there be any play in the Diff Gears?

No, this is not good, there should be a small, usually about 0.004 or 0.006, backlash but check the specs. Some slop in the differential gears is normal. A 1/4 turn at the pinion seems like a bit much but I'll let others with more recent first-hand experience comment.

My bad, by zero, I meant it was within tolerance. It is within the .006. I am thinking I will need to correct the preload on the Diff gears

Odd, I have a Dana 53 yet I have a four cross spider with the two ouputs, not like that in the book or any of the Dana 53 manuals I have found. The Carrier, (Locker) is defiantly from a Dana 60. Anyway look at how the spiders slop on the cross, this cant be right.

It looks to be the twin traction. Check out this threadpackardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... .php?post_id=146976#forumpost146976 and the Stude manual listed in post 3 to compare with yours.

Also check out this thread for a slightly different version of the twin tractionpackardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... .php?post_id=144960#forumpost144960

Yep, there is my Answer. I have a nice addition of a Posi Track rear end. According to the book, the excess slop is normal and the noise is natural. I also learned that the Locker must be replaced as an entire unit when they do go bad, as they were made to be non-serviceable.
