1939 six cyl. coolant leak below water pump

i am restoring a 39 6-cyl, which has suddenly developed a coolant leak just below the water pump in the center of the engine. There seems to be some kind of plug there, difficult to access without removing the generator and/or fan. I can see what appears to be an old dry gasket protruding. Any thoughts on what this is and how to remedy without removing the entire front part of the car? It is definitely not leaking from the water pump.
