Packard Plant Doorway

Yesterday I went to start my truck that has been in storage for a year since 2007 Hershey. I keep it loaded for the Hershey show from year to year, no work loading. Anyway the building in Detroit where the truck is stored indoors has quite a pile of large granite type blocks and lentils piled near the truck. It turns out that they are the famous doorway from the Packard plant that was auctioned off recently. They are being stored there until they ultimately go to the Packard museum. I will be taking the truck out of the storage building in two weeks to get it ready for the Hershey show and will have a camera with me. Its really not much to look at except for all the history that happened on East Grand Boulevard. I'll also try and capture a picture of the plant as it looks today minus the famous doorway. I will post it also. I never would have guessed that morning that I would bump into some Packard history.

It for sure is a small world!

We I am glad that I went and got my picture taken in front of it while I could. Who would have known!

Here are some photos of the doorway blocks in storage. Also there is the granite radiator that was on the bridge over east Grand Blvd.

I know the blocks don't look like much, but they are being saved and will be reassembled. The radiator needed to come down before the vandals could destroy it. It is really a massive 3 pieces of granite.

Thanks for the pic's. The granite blocks are tangible pieces of Packard history and will now be preserved for future generations.

Sadly, the one picture looks like a tombstone. I went by the plant this morning and could not believe how much destruction the looters have caused. It has went downhill more in the last six months than the last 50 years. I'll post a couple of photos today or tomorrow.

Wow, it has really lost the last touches of grace it had.

Glad I got my picture taken there while I could.

I vaguely remember it as a kid when it was working factory. Sad to see it come to this.
