heli-coil vs. insert

During the second re-torque of my rebuilt 2106 (356), a head bolt has stripped at the block end. Some new studs are on their way.

I hope that chasing the threads in the block and a new stud will fix the issue, but I am expecting the worst and entertaining the possibility that I may be removing the head and fixing the threads in the block.

My question: which would be the better choice for this repair a heli-coil or insert?

Thanks,

Mark

I have had very good results using a helicoil. I do not remove the head as it provides a great guide for straight drilling.

You may be tightening the studs into the block when you tighten the nuts. This should not be taking place. The studs should not turn with the nuts. Ideally, the nuts will pull on the stud for tightening down the head.

I have had good luck with Heli-Coil to repair damaged threads.

Thanks guys.
I have never installed a heli-coil and may enlist some professional help.

I'm wondering though - Ross, with the head in place, what happens when you break off the tang? I'm also wondering how you can tell that the heli-coil is installed at the right depth?

The tang falls down into the water jacket never to be heard from again. I measure the depth with a cheap dial caliper, or in most cases by peering down the hole with a good flashlight.

I guess this question goes to Ross. I received my heli-coil kit today and some new studs. This kit comes with a plastic insertion tool designed to sit flush with the threaded hole, not possible with head in place. I'm a bit confused how to insert the coil.
Apologies for the basic mechanics' questions.
Thanks,
Mark

I believe the plastic part is a guide, you might be able to use the shaft with the coil on the end. I have done it with the 288 in my woodie. Very important to mark the length with masking tape so you don't thread the coil to far into the block. Also use some locktight on the coil. Dell

I don't use the outer guide, just the insertion tool.
