Hi

For those who couldn't make it or missed these wonderful Packards at Hershey this year, feast your eyes. Other than a short thunderstorm late Friday afternoon, it was four glorious sunny warm days immersed in old cars. Enjoy! More photos to come shortly.

I believe the convertible sedan is a '37.

Yes, the convertible sedan is a '37. So many nice Packards; a friend from NJ showed his freshly restored '36 Twelve convertible Victoria and took a First Junior - it was parked next to Ralph Marano's '35 Graber. A large crowd around Dave Lockhard's WW I era Packard truck. Lots of other interesting and uncommon cars; an outstanding '34 Pierce Arrow LeBaron Twelve convertible sedan next to Marano's Graber, an entirely original '24 Marmon roadster and at least 2 Reo Royales - a seldom-seen CCCA Classic. Another wonderful Hershey weekend. I drove down to Hershey with a friend from Perth Australia who is in the process of restoring a 1900 Renault; restoring may be the wrong word choice, it's more like remanufacturing around a very limited number of original and useable components. Power train is a single cylinder upright air-cooled DeDion-Bouton engine and amazingly, a sliding gear transmission which I believe was an automotive first and patented by Renault.

That '36 had a hell of a nice restoration. Loved it.

Thanks for the nice words, West, and I'll pass them on to the owner. Other than some body panel work, paint and upholstery it was mostly an owner-done restoration, took him about 8 years. There are some pictures of it during the restoration on the PAC website which I believe you've previously seen and commented on. Sold new by Thompson Motor Co. in Beverly Hills, CA.

Ralph's '35 Graber is a car that just reeks of Werner Risch details - Risch was the Packard agent in Switzerland and had the car commissioned for the 1935 Geneva auto show. Some pre-restoration photos of it here. Of course it's a matter of personal taste but to me this car just begs to be two-toned with a lighter body color and I do prefer the "unrestored" color scheme far better than the dark brown with black leather top.

I have to respectfully disagree in regard to the lighter color that the Graber car was painted in the 1980s. When I first saw that restoration (at the Indianapolis CCCA Grand Classic, I believe), I was repulsed by the pansy blue color, and am glad to see it painted in UPS Brown and black. I still hate the grille guard, and think it would look much better in the front without it. It wasn't even on the car when new. Also the chrome trunk rack was too much, and it, too, was not the same as when new.

Colors are a very personal choice West, so no need to "beg" to disagree, just one man's preference over another's. But as you noted that the stone guard wasn't on the car when new, either was a leather top.

Still, and on this I'm sure we'll agree, one of the most interesting and elegant Packards and that so much of it is unique to just this single car.

I don't much care for the way Packard cars are being done today. Customization is more like it. I don't bother with shows anymore because of this situation. Most of the cars don't look right at all. There is the unusual exception of course and I like those jobs. But the rest I'm not interested in looking at.

Thanks West, have to remember to check the telltale: Bumpers! 1936's are the last with vibration dampers, 1937's single bar possible because of IFS.

More, as promised. The '36 Twelve Sport Phaeton drew a great deal of attention, has real presence.

The '38 Twelve Convertible Victoria by Derham is quite severe-looking though handsome in the dark colors and blackwalls. Interesting that in spite of that body style being catalogued by the factory, a customer would go to the trouble to have a full custom-bodied version created. One supposes the original customer was a loyal Derham-bodied car owner prior to this one.

Hi

A couple more I missed, a black '40 120 convertible sedan parked directly across from the red '37 120 convertible sedan pictured above. The striking difference in the top heights was very easy to observe: standing at the windshield header next to the '37, one can sight across the top of the material; next to the '40, another of two inches of height is in view. One wonders if the taller top height was the result of customer complaints, in that hat-wearing era?

Bringing up the rear is the old soldier WW I Packard truck.
