I believe the letters are supposed to be painted red.
the actual emblem has a red background with gold emblem or crest.
I have a '52 as well. my trunk lid ornament needs work. chrome is gone as well as the Packard name is not painted.
I am told the emblem needs help. project 429....LOL
I bet if you google you can find a good pic of what it should look like....
good luck
tim

I believe Tim is correct on the red letters but having said that, there are others with different opinions. 51 had black letters and some say so did 52. I do believe you see more red letters on restored cars so there must have been some paint left to go by. Packard seemed to be ashamed to show good views of the rear but what little is visible in some sales brochures seem to look more red than black. The actual plastic center portion was the same for 51 and 52.

Here are a couple of photos. One is of a restored 52 from the photo gallery. It has the red letters. The other is a portion showing just the plastic emblem on an immaculate low mileage 51 photographed by O_D. Emblemagic reproduces the plastic insert but it is expensive and generally has a several month wait as they only build in small batches depending on demand. Their site says they currently have one in stock.

The lettering on the 52 trunk handle is not a bright red like the hubcap hex, it is very close to the translucent red/maroon on the 47-51 hubcap cloisonne . Best bet is nail polish.
