I think I would try to find a 42 packard before I would drop $200 for this ZIS! It will take someone with a lot of money and little common sense to buy this.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you

Hi BDC, I agree with "a lot of money" but not necessarily about the lack of common sense. These cars are very highly sought after by a relatively small cadre of folks, many in Russia and the former USSR territories. I've had the good fortune to become personally involved with 3 of them, and have visited another under restoration in Sweden. Not for the mainstream hobbyists for sure, but still rare, many with a history of famous personage ownership, and valuable. Last one I saw still in a government service was when the father of the little Napoleon (I'm being kind) from North Korea passed some years ago - a fleeting view of it in the funeral cortege. I understand Vladimir Putin owns on. Endlessly interesting features, for example the Russian knock-off of the Carter carburetor - similar enough that Daytona was able to rebuild it, yet different. The mixture of English and Metric specifications, etc. Gusha may have much more to add.

Here's your erstwhile correspondent sitting in the rear of a ZIS parade car while it was local to me in the U.S. And the same car as just delivered in Sweden after re-export from the US. It's a 1950 model. Now, as to whether it's worth the asking price, I haven't a clue.

Paul (55clipperguy) thanks for the good catch. I was alerted by a friend from UK. The seller intends to adopt a three-pronged strategy

-> offer #1 ($200,000.00)
-> offer #2 ($230,000.00)
-> offer #3 ($50,000 opening bid)

Considering the price, the risk to get into trouble for having to deliver the very same car to two or even three new owners is comparatively small but it tells something about the vendor.

BDC, you're right in saying that the asking price is beyond reason but when the talk comes to passion then we are well advised to remember that passion doesn't care about prices.

Yes, Dave (O_D) boils it down to the essence. The early years in life exercise the most formative influence of individual value system and sense of beauty. A ZIS embodies and preserves Soviet dreams.

Mal, thanks for the good words. This car is new to me. To come up to the expectations I skimmed through many pics but again no clue. Therefore just some few minor remarks during the next days.
With one or another short interruption the car was stored for decades. If the obviously original tires could talk ...
