Following along with Kev's and Mal's posting of pictures from recent shows, here's a sampling from Day 1 (U.S. cars) of the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance. Day 2 (Sunday) is for European cars and the Bonham Auction. Some of these pictured cars are fairly well-know to us locally, I won't post captions but if you have a question about 1 or more I'll try to answer.

Just an interesting note on the wheel covers seen on Ralph Marano's (ex-Paul Lamb, ex-Chorky) 1934 1101 station wagon by Bridgeport. I always refer to these spoke covers as "Ace-type" as Ace was one of the suppliers of them; I don't really know much about them, they are pictured in the Packard catalogs from '33 thru '36 (perhaps earlier, not later) though as I recall always painted a body color. Perhaps they were also available in chromium plate. Regardless, an interesting and not often seen accessory.

Hi Dave

Thanks for the fine pictures, Greenwich has the best selection of cars. Any show that attracts a "shark-nose" Graham Combination Coupe is a great one. That model and the '39 Chrysler, Desoto and Dodge Victoria Coupes bodies were all built by Hayes Body Co. of Grand Rapids, MI. They have those lovely thin chrome window frames, looking like an early hardtop. Wished Packard had contracted a special group of bodies with that feature in those years.

Hi Steve:

I agree, Greenwich, year after year, just gets the most amazing cross-section of really interesting and unusual cars, far better than any other event I attend. Of those that I pictured, 3 that really got some special attention by me were (1) the Chrysler Imperial Airflow, (2) the Cunningham C-3 by Vignale, and (3) the outrageously art deco yellow Studebaker. Their "special marque" for the European cars (today, Sunday) is Bugatti and it looks like they'll have more than a dozen!!

And you've found another fan of the Hayes coupes on Chrysler, Desoto and Dodge chassis in 1939. Photo attached from one at the (now closed and defunct?) Chrysler museum.

Nice to see pictures of stock cars is the Airflow a two door can't really tell from photo they are rare to see and bold styling effort for the time. When you look at one up close a lot of effort went into making them different from the rest of that period cars. summer car shows are a great way for us car people to enjoy the nice weather

Hi Dave

Thanks for posting the Hayes-bodied Dodge coupe photo, I'm away from home now and my files with reference images.

Both Graham and '39 Mopar Hayes coupes figure as rare collector cars that haunt my memories:

First: in 1967 walking a junkyard with my father and brother near Kanona, NY I can upon my first in-the-metal 'sharknose' Graham and it was the rare Combination Coupe. Weathered as was everything else there, I'm sure it was lost.

Second: Twenty-to-twenty-five years ago at the Dunkirk Swap Meet in May, cutting through the spectator parking I came upon a '39 Chrysler Imperial Victoria Coupe, either a Saratoga or New Yorker on a trailer from Pennsylvania. No price or contact information, just a solid, rare car to tantalize me. How rare? One of 134 built! I hope it survives and is restored in the safe keeping of a Mopar collector.

Steve
