Exhaust Manifolds will not fit

I'm installing exhaust manifolds on my 1939 Packard Six and they are not fitting properly. My problem is the two outside studs and nuts will not fit. The four inside studs, washers, and nuts fit great; however, there is no room to fit the nuts (let alone the washers) to the outside studs. I took out the three bolts that hold the two manifolds together to get more play; still not enough room to attach the nuts. Also, there is nothing to clamp the manifold down on the two outside studs.

I believe that last stud should be a whole lot longer and attach to the two flat planes shown.

J.D. is correct, the last stud should be much longer and a special clamping plate is used to bear against the two flat lugs on the manifold. Also the washer under the other stud shown is significantly undersize.

A picture is worth a thousand words... maybe this will help (it's Big Kev's 8 and not a 6 but it's the same setup):

I believe the reason for your trouble is the manifold setup pictured is the later version, 1941-47+ which uses a long stud/butterfly washer similar to the picture. If I look through my binoculars, I think I see the casting number 356728 on the exhaust manifold? This manifold is not designed to require the outermost studs of your 39 block. Make sense?

More info- The 1937 115c (1st year for 6) used a exhaust manifold that attached to the ENDS of the exhaust manifold. Many cracked due to the rigid design. I understand that 1938 had a design change, although it may have been later. My '37 115c driver has the newer style and I have a broken one as evidence of the design flaw.

...actually there were two part number changes, and Packard then spec'd the later manifold design as the service replacement. I believe this was covered in the service bulletins, point being, what is missing in the picture is the longer stud with the butterfly washer to make the later manifold fit on the earlier engines.

My personal theory on cracked exhaust manifolds is due more to overtightening and malfunctioning (stuck in the closed position) exhaust manifold heat valves than poor design. Just my opinion.
