I’m at my shop again for the first time since July and found that my PC isn’t working so I’m posting this from my iPad.

This visit’s work is going to be entirely to clear out the left (west) quarter of the shop so that insulation can be put in the day before I leave. I have made good headway but for the Patrician which is in the way for the work, there are two choices: pull it outside, then push it back in again which will require the tractor OR get it to go out and come back in under its own power so that’s what I’m trying for. It needs the reinstalled TreadleVac, which has been rebuilt, bleed brakes, assemble the fuel pump and put in petrol. The steering column also needs to be reinstalled after the shifter was unstuck when I was here last. If time, I’ll also fix a seep at the thermostat housing.

Photos show rebuilt TreadleVac alongside the one that came out, the fuel pump pump in pieces. The old diaphragms are probably in too bad shape to try to save!

Is there a chart somewhere showing the different applications for AC fuel pumps? The one being rebuilt is not the one from this car but it is AC 9920 which is one of the two used for most 1951-1954 Packards except for a few which had Carter pumps. I have many cores and simply picked the best looking one! I would like to be able to identify the others, though.

It doesn’t usually take me all day to assemble a fuel pump as it did today but I thought I had gotten it all cleaned and ready the last time I was here. Instead I found it full of old oil where the arms are and the solvent tank is currently inaccessible so i did the best I could with aerosol carburetor cleaner and engine degreaser.

Also, the new kits I have look well-made but the valves are a press fit so I have no idea how it will ever be taken apart again! I had also misplaced the bowl and its bolt but had one handy on the pump from the parts car. Not a great cosmetic job as the goal now, which is actually a rush, is just to get the car to be drivable enough to move outside and back in under its own power.

I also looked over the shifter assembly to put it back in but it was getting late and chilly by then and I could not locate the photos I had taken for the lever orientation so came back the block to the house where I could find them at my leisure, which I did.

Putting in steering column back together, is there some trick for getting in the shift rod’s fibre bushing? It seems larger than the hole so overlaps itself slightly.

Can't help you with the bushing, but I did want to say that the photo of the rebuilt BTV next to the old is great. That rebuilt unit is beautiful.

Thank you, Kevin! It’s just paint, though, and would have been so much better if zinc and copper plated. I may do that the next time when I rebuild the other two cores that I have.

I decided to take apart the parts car’s column as some small screws and the detent spacer disappeared and while at it, I unstuck it. It was a surprise to see that the detent shaft floats on three rubber bushings! Can this be original?

On the top column bushing, I still haven’t gotten it together as I realized I had left out the spacer washer between the detent mechanism so I took it apart again. Since it had also gone missing, I borrowed the one from the other column along with the detent return spring’s cap. On the latter, I am not sure how to get it in without losing it again as I did the first one. If there’s a trick, I would love to hear it!

Steele lists the steering column firewall grommet (even though it is shown upside down on their site) but does anyone make the felt seal on top of it? Yes, I know I can make it myself but I prefer to buy pre-made.
