My 1940 120 did not have the embossed firewall number. It did have the two diamonds that are usually at the beginning and the end of the number, but no number.

1940 seemed to use only the cowl plate and I do have a mostly rebuilt 1940 110 engine, non-overdrive transmission and possibly the matching cowl plate! I'm not sure but I may also have the California title to go with the cowl plate and engine.

For reasons still not yet understood, approximately the first third of 1940 production did not have a theft-proof or body serial number. Use of this numbering system began with the 6th Series and the only other time bodies without numbers is noted is a few scattered early 1955 vehicles.

1940 models without the number are seen both with and without the triangular end brackets.

So if no body serial or theft proof number what was used on a title? It does have the triangles but no signs of numbers.
Would the numbers under seat be a possible match could the body number have been 1800-4490
Number could be 1490

As a new vehicle it would almost certainly have been titled by the vehicle number which would have appeared on the metal patent or VN plate. That number would appear no where else on the car so once the plate is removed, the car would have to be titled by an alternative number, perhaps the motor number or perhaps the state would have assigned its own unique number.

Generally, once the plate goes missing, unless you can find the original VN from prior owners or old documents, your car's original number is not recoverable. An exception might be the earlier vehicle s built with composite wood frame and steel skin construction. Often the last few digits of the sequential portion of the VN can be found on structural wooden members, often in doors and seats.

Thief proof or body ID numbers are large embossed in the sheet metal numbers on the firewall near the top and over toward the passenger side of the car. On most models the numbers are between a pair of triangles and on later models sometimes they are partially hidden behind the heater box.

Engine side of the cowl. 22nd Series and later it was placed over the heater box location; in earlier years it was generally at the top center of the cowl. Six digits beginning in 1929 with 000001; starting with the 24th Series they were 5 digits preceded by first an "A", and then "B" and "C", ending with "D" in 1956. Not used in 1957 and 1958.

Here's some detail. Note the unusual representation of the digit "1". The factory print misrepresents the shape of the character "D"; in practice it was much more square and as the dies became worn and indistinct by 1956 it's sometimes difficult to tell a "D" from an "0" which also has a squarish shape. The triangular end brackets were not used on the junior models 1935-1937 and thus for those 3 years there may be some duplicity of numbers, though distinguished, senior or junior, by the presence or absence of the brackets.
