Need Help With 1934 Packard 3 Filament Headlight Connection Data

I have been working on a clients's 34' Packard to replace the wiring harness and perform miscellaneous wiring repairs.

He and I are at a point where we would like to confirm the correct headlight function. His car has the 3 filament bulbs and sockets.

Specifically I need to know the correct connections and light functions for both the right and left headlight socket terminals Nos. 1, 2, and 3.

I understand the left headlight has a jumper between socket terminal Nos. 1 and 3, while the right socket uses all three terminals independently.

Our research has not come up with a definitive answer yet. Available drawings fail to show the headlight socket terminals. They only refer to filament function, such as hi, lo, tilt, pass, etc.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Thank you for the link to the relevant thread.

In that link, member Tim Cole seems to offer the most relevant reply, which I have posted below in blue font.

I would love to hear a confirmation or two that this is, in fact, the correct information regarding the socket wiring and terminal numbers.

Thanks all.

Hi Dell:

I have the information here in a file along with a picture of Gordon Weber's (first CCCA President) beautiful original 33 Packard Su8. I love the chrome radiator shell.

Anyway, the bulb socket has a square notch in it and pins at 6, 10, and 2 O'clock. Use the notch as 6 O'clock.

6 O'clock - Red 10 O'clock - Straw 2 O'clock - Green

Next the numbers for those wires are as follows:

6 O'clock - 1 10 O'clock - 2 3 O'clock - 3

Finally, the drivers side should have a bar connecting the two high beam pins because the right side light is the dipping side for the three filament bulb. If you don't have the bar you can splice the "pass" and "tilt" wires together inside the headlight and achieve the same result. These are shown as the single brown high beam feed in the wiring diagram.

Hope this helps.

Hello Paul:

I am sending you a PM with the e-mail address of Bruce Blevins, the guy that reproduced the 1933/4, 3-filament light bulb and reproduces the correct socket for that bulb.

Talking about Tim Cole, does anybody know what happened to him? I havent seen him here for a while, I always enjoyed his tremendous knowledge of especially prewar Packards, and always have to laugh about his cow size potholes in Michigan's roads.

I think even a torsion level Packard can't handle that

I am told that Bruce is the authority on 33-34' headlight wiring, but unfortunately does not have his notes available to refer to at this time.

Anyone else have any insights?

I believe you are talking about Solar Ray headlights. If so this should help you if you haven't figured it out as of yet.
