Loosening timing chain cover

My 740 was fitted with a 1931 mechanical fuel pump riveted to the timing chain cover. I need to loosen the timing chain cover enough to slip the section of gasket that abuts the oil pan into place. I don't know how the fuel pump connects with the gearing underneath. Will there be any issue with the fuel pump gearing if the cover is loosened enough to make perhaps a 1/8" gap for installing the lower gasket? Any other possible issues re timing chain etc?

You could have an issue if you pull it out more than 1/8". I recommend that you disconnect both fuel lines, remove the fuel pump and then pull out the fuel pump rod. You can now pull the cover out as far as you want with out worrying about the fuel pump rod falling into the crank case.
