Hi Guys,
Sad day for me on 2 counts
1. My niece and her Aussie husband Ross are moving back to Oz.
Ross is a great guy and has always been there for me when we worked on the Packard. He has the typical Aussie laid back attitude to life and is great to work with.
2. My tenure as caretaker of my much loved Super8 has now come to an end. The car was always intended to be Ross's inheritance as he Loves Jean-Luc as much as I do.
He is going to a good home and much warmer climes and I know he will be well looked after. All of them will be sorely missed
I will not of course be leaving the site and would like to thank everybody for all their help over the years that you have given me and Ross.
Well Mal sorry I have not replied to PM as I only saw it today.
Yes, please can you update everything for me on the records and many thanks for taking Ross and Jean-Luc under your wing when they get to Oz. We had a good asbestos inspector and received the all clear so Jean-Luc has all his documentation
Once again thanks to everyone and keep up the good work on this wonderful site

I'm glad that Jean-Luc passed it's asbestos inspection. Looks like my "Henny Penny" (Chicken Little) warnings were unfounded.

Any idea of a ETA for Jean-Luc in the land of Oz? I'll update the Owner Registry then.

Ross has already joined the Packard club here downunder and we look forward to meeting him, your niece and Jean-Luc in person.

At the moment the answer is no. The car was picked up yesterday and was taken to Rainham docks in Essex. Ross may be able to tell you when Jean-Luc is due to arrive in Oz as he is in contact with the shippers. Please keep in touch.

Hummmmmmm asbestos inspection?? brake shoes? elaborate please.

brake shoes,clutch disc, exhaust manifold gaskets, maybe head gasket, exhaust donut???

And in addition to those items, I believe some of the 20s or 30s models had asbestos insulation wrapped around a length of exhaust pipe where it passed near another component.

HH56, the asbestos wrap on the exhaust header was where the pipe was in close proximity to the wooden toe boards.

What is used on restorations in place of asbestos for things like that?

Asbestos!
Australia has strict regulations in place concerning the import of asbestos. In fact it's a No No.

Couple of links, Aust Gov't Regulations and a story re importing a car containing asbestos. Believe things are better now with procedures set up at both ends of the supply chain to smooth the process out.

Don, the replacement exhaust header wrap on my Packard is a glass wool product, in quite common use by the professional restoration fraternity. It was around for decades, I assume it's still available though I haven't seen it advertised recently. Excellent product.
