Interesting what Ross said here in the transmission thread in reference to the photo below. I have never seen a Henney-Packard with that type of yoke as they’ve always had the middle one and, as I mentioned, mine has overall is considerably shorter.

Incidentally, what is the device on the side that is not the governor or solenoid? This one I got today has the hole for it but nothing in it when was supposed to be complete and ready to go!

Some clarification after further checking the parts list:

I was incorrect in stating that the 1951 overdrive transmission was different than 1952-54. They are all the same for the standard model cars.

What is different for the Henney cars is the sliding output shaft and flange (Part # 426944, Group 3.236) which mates up with a Mechanics u-joint rather than the Spicer u-joint used on the standard models.The rest of the unit is the same as the other cars including the longer housing. Unfortunately that output shaft is unique to the 1951-54 Hearse & Ambulance chassis so probably almost impossible to find.

It would appear that the transmission from your car was replaced with an earlier type at some point.

The transmission with the shorter case in your photo appears to be an R-11 unit rather than an R-9 as the R-9 has the lockout lever and solenoid on the right side where the R-11 has them on the left.

The missing part an the transmission that you just received is the lockout switch.

That does help shed some light on it and thank you for the research. The existing transmission did indeed come from an earlier model which can be seen in the threaded side mount holes but oddly it also has the holes and pad for the single rear mount that started in 1951.

It was in a different 1951 Henney-Packard when I bought it and as this 1951 Henney-Packard was its parts car, its proper R11 transmission was donated to the other. Both were short so it’s not possible that the new one is the proper length when it’s 28” and the one from this car was 21” but I won’t know for sure until I try to install the driveshaft and see how much space there is for the transmission.

I took a shot of the rear flange from the transmission just received after seeing if I could have installed the previous transmission in the other Henney-Packard if it were 7” shorter and it was expecting one longer. No way that would have worked!

This transmission came from a 1953 Henney Junior but that does not show the same part number as the 1951-1954 senior Henneys which are also the same as the long wheelbase sedans and limousines for 1953 and 1954. The Henney Junior has a single driveshaft while the others have a double shaft.

Maybe a solution to my transmission conundrum is to use the transmission portion of the new one, paired with the overdrive of the old one (which is indeed R11). I have no idea if they use the same spline (or whatever connects them together) and in this case the parts book doesn’t help much because the Henneys had specially harden components so of course they have different part numbers even if they are otherwise identical. It is not absolutely clear to me what year the old transmission came from but it is clearly 1948-1950 as it has the drilled and tapped side mounting holes that 1951-1954 did not have. Although I would prefer a proper senior Henney transmission, at this point I really don’t care as long as it works to move the car around under its own power!

Does anyone have any thoughts on the possibility of combining the two?

The earlier R-11 will bolt up to the later transmission case as the splined extension on the transmission mainshaft for overdrive is the same for all years, so an easy changeover.

Short of having them made, does anyone know a source for the transmission gaskets that go between the housings? I don't care to make them myself and I also do not care to kludge it by using sealer (gasket maker) instead of gaskets. I already tried Olson's Gaskets, Northwest Transmission and FATSCO.

Still no luck on finding gaskets for the transmission, especially the one between the overdrive and main castings.

In the meantime I have been sourcing a few other things that will be needed including a fuel sender for the tank. Those on the Henney-Packards for 1951-1954 were interesting as they have the mounting type and general appearance of the 1948-1950 senders but rather than using a bi-metal strip, they send standard resistance to the 1951+ gauge type. I have been talking with TriStarr LLC in New York about rebuilding it and they have been quick and very friendly in their responses. Has anyone here used them or even heard of them?

Not familiar with TriStarr but have you checked with KM lifestyle?http://www.mykmlifestyle.com/KM_Lifestyle_Fuel_Senders.html

Their site says they are able to mfg new senders although I think those are probably the resistance type only and not the 48-50 style. I am aware of one poster who has had them do a 47 sender and the price was not horrible.
