FUEL PUMP....It seems to be missing a plug from the side because gas spirts out when accelerating. I can feel a hole in the side where a plug MUST have been at some point. Any thoughts?

Packard used an air dome to smooth out pump pulses on models thru 51 or 52. The dome was eliminated after that. The castings are probably the same but with the air dome eliminated you will need a plug for the extra hole. If the gas is spurting from another hole besides where the air dome would go please provide a photo of where it is coming from.

If fuel is spitting out the side, then the diaphragm has been breached and fuel is getting where it should not go. Time for a rebuild.

Good point. If the fuel is coming more from the engine side of the pump, as I recall there is a small breather hole in the casting up near the mounting bolts. If fuel is getting thru the diaphragm and out the breather then I would also be concerned that it may be getting into the engine via the actuating lever hole and diluting the oil.

It's not the engine side. Opposite side.
I would post a photo but I'm not there. It doesn't look like the fuel pump in the reply photo.

If you mean the hole within the red circle then I believe there is a screw missing which will be like the remaining ones all around the casting and shown at the arrows. Probably the same size as those with heads visible on the top vacuum section only threading in from below. Those screws are holding the two halves of the fuel side of the casting together. It could be with the missing screw the gas is being pushed under the diaphragm and out the hole. I would also check the remaining screws to make sure they are tight.

I see what appears to be a black arrow as pointing towards the area that typically has a crankcase vent in the center body of the pump. If so, gasoline leaking from there indicates a leaking fuel diaphragm. If that is the case, fix it quickly as you are also diluting your crankcase oil in addition to the fire hazard.

The thing to do it to get a modern rebuild kit and fix it properly.
