This is a forum to share what I am doing to get my 1940 160 model 1362 Touring sedan back on the road. This will be a rolling restauration meaning I want to get the car running and then work on what needs to be done as I go. The goal for the car is to keep it as authentic and original as possible. The car itself is pretty much an unmolested original car but very weathered and worn. I have had the car 20 years but have not worked on it for the past 17 years. It has been stored in a dry place for the past 22 years. In this forum I plan on sharing pictures documenting the work and the car with the intent of being a resource to others who might be in a similar situation.

Here are some photos of where I am as I started back into the car this summer.

Here are interior photos for my friend Sam who is trying to figure out how his interior goes together on his 1940 160 1803 Touring Sedan. It is hard to piece an interior together if someone took it out before you got the car. Sorry the picture orientation is all wonky. Click on the picture to orient it correctly.

Welcome! Glad to see you are beginning a project to return you 1940 160 to the road. There is a lot of accurate advice and enthusiastic encouragement here to call on. Thanks for starting a project blog, not only makes posting progress easier, but also the place to post questions and find answers for later reference. Congrats on getting started on your '40. You car is set up for a truck rack (the placement of the license plate fixture on the trunk lid, the plain rear bumper and bumper extensions) indicate that. Do you still have the trunk rack?

Sounds like you'll focus on the engine and running gear to start. There are cautionary steps before you try to start it to avoid internal damage.

I'm new here. Are you on the Bush River or in Bethesda?

Am I seeing more insulation than normal? Was this an air-conditioned car?

Joe - good to see your are back on=line...are you and The Dutchess settled in?

And yes, this is THE resource to seek assistance, counsel and camaraderie with your Packard adventure. 22 years is a long time to wait...surely time to get on with it.

I wouldn't say there is more insulation than normal compared to a 1940 model 120 that I worked on in the past.

This car became a part donor at some point - it is missing the original radio, the under dash heater, the air cleaner and the trunk rack.

I don't see any evidence of air conditioning. That would be pretty hard to miss.

Is there a best practice written up on bringing a 356 super eight back to life? I read somewhere about filling the crankcase with oil and pressurizing the engine lubrication system without starting the car which makes sense but I am wondering what is the best way to do that.

Here is a thing of beauty a rebuilt Houdaille "fifth" shock by Apple Hydraulics and a new lateral stabilizer bar from Max Merritt. I have been looking for good used parts for twenty years and finally decided to bite the bullet, spend the money and get this done right.

I have some oil bath air cleaner questions for this car. Not knowing what I was looking for over the years I ended up with three different air cleaners!

The one I ended up using on the car is reputed to be a 1941 super eight air cleaner but I have a friend with a 1940 160 that also has the same air cleaner.

Just for grins the second photo is of my other two air cleaners that are now looking for a new home. Any ideas what years they belong to?
