My 47 super clipper carburator is fitted with a wrong metering rod. Somebody of its previous owners designed a carburator of different carter parts. Could anybody please push me in the right direction were i can buy spare parts for this carburator? In the "Daytona" overhaul kits this part is not included. thank you very much in advance, BR Josef

For a Carter WDO Parts List 531S - Metering Rods

75-538 Superseded by 75-616
75-539 Lean 1 Superseded by 75-639
75-540 Lean 2 Superseded by 75-640

Carter had the nasty habit of changing the diameters of both the secondary venturi, and main venturi that results in unique combinations of venturi size, area ratios, main jets and metering rods. There also seems to be a host of vacumeter springs available.

I have yet to find a metering rod from another parts list that would have the correct geometry, but I will put my nose to the grindstone this evening.

What is the number on the metering rod(s) you have?

i will ask the guy who has got my carburator on his bench.

I do not the job my myself. because i am afraid my kitchentable is not the right place. I want to help him to find the parts he needs. usual he is in the buisiness for stromberg and SU.
i just had asked him what he is looking for. because he stucks with my job in finding the right parts. everything else is done. I guess the parts he has asked for are from the carburator manual.

i will ask him what is today in my carburator.
I will come back ASAP, i hope you will find something.
BR Josef

JosefClipper47;
Metering rod part number 75-621 is from the 643S & SA parts list. It is the Lean 2 (meaning two steps lean from standard) configuration. The diameter geometry is 0.0685, 0.0625, 0.056, those would be the diameter of the rod in inches . . . measured at the three steps.

The 75-538 / 75-616 metering rod geometry is 0.064, 0.057, 0.054

Both the 531 and 643 share the same main jet size of 0.0955 inch diameter.

Both carburetors appear to have the same venturi sizing, therefore you can compute the gasoline flow area and do a direct comparison of the two configurations.

The Carter parts lists will list the standard metering rod, and then two additional rods that would produce a leaner mixtures. I've always associated the lean metering rods for cars that are operating at altitude. If your car is operating above 5000 feet the two step lean maybe suitable. At any rate it looks like a sometime in the past your carburetor was adjusted for altitude operation . . . or someone lost the standard metering rods.

Good morning DP.
i hope your evening together with the grindstone was a success?

Thank you for your detailed reply. Your information is very important for me. ( the car comes from the Albuquerque area, that fits maybe to 5000ft)

But today ( if the carburator is back) it will run on 200 feet altitude.

looking forward to your reply. i hope you can find something suitable,
best regards Josef

Hi Joseph,
Hope your carb runs well. Will you be checking the mixture with a CO meter or "lambda sonde"?
I had to increase the jets on my other oldtimer to get a really good mixture, but have not gotten that exact with my packard -yet.

Hi Tobs,

i have got a lot of troubl with this carb. We have passed the technical inspection . now the car is official road legal. but the engine runs much to lean. the engine temerature is much to hot. the carburator is boiling after a short ride. we have checked the CO value with a electronic device. even with max adjustment ( screws are close to fell off) the CO value is less than 1%. I brought the carb to a carb specialist for a overhaul. he has made bushings for the worn out throtle shaft and some more things. he found out that the carb configuration is much to lean.
looking forward to have a better result soon. BR Josef
