Thanks to all of you for your responses. No tacking strips or toothed retainers were used on the headliner's installation, but they are used on the seat frames. Based on all of your input, it looks like the plan proposed by my wife "the boss", early this year. Proving once you should never not listen to your wife!
Skimpily , the plan now is, to hang the headliner on the clips above the back window . That locks the first bow in place.
Trim the lasting holding each bow, as needed to insure sufficient material will be available to securely glue to the outside roof edge.
Steaming each section of headliner, while stretching in both directions and clamping the outside edges while working forward.
Apply contact cement to both surfaces ,roof and back side of vinyl at windshield. Install front window trim, above to help hold the headliner tight, front to rear.
With the headliner snug fit front to rear, return to the rear window to steam, stretch, pull, and glue to remove any wrinkles.
Working one panel at a time to pull, steam if necessary , and glue sides to remove any wrinkles. Install trim, lamps, coat hangers, sun visors mirror support and stainless trim.

Once again thanks for your input, have several projects to deal with. hope to have headliner in by year end
