1950 / 2301 - Throw out bearing

Looking for guidance.

My bearing is toast so I can't get part numbers or accurate specs.

I am trying to track down what the difference is in the parts that are listed in the database.

Factory group 3.148

Part listing is 341817 for the/my 2301

But also listed for that group is 426491,335355, 426491.

I'm guessing they are different dimensions for the 288 10.5in vs 356 11in clutch?

I found an nos 426491 collar and bearing replacement but I am not sure if it will work.

The 341817 is listed for RHD cars (right hand drive). I suspect the difference between a right and left hand throwout bearing assy would be the export engine which I think was the six only. The same assy is also used on the older six and 282 engines. Unless your car is RHD you want the 426491 shown in the other listing for a 2301. That bearing assy is also the same piece used in 51-4 cars since most of their engines and trans are essentially the same as used in the 22-23rd series small eight.

The clutch plate size is one difference between engines but the more important difference on that particular bearing is the diameter of the throwout assy. The 356 engines use a transmission with a larger input shaft and the sleeve that the bearing assy rides on is larger than used with the other engines. 335355 is the piece listed for 2206-13-26- etc models with the 356 and the bearing assy would fit that larger transmission only.

Hi All,
I have a 52 200 deluxe, my throw out bearing is a little noisy and I was wondering if anyone knows what bearing to press on the collar? mine is a 1686-1 but I think I've seen replacement bearings that are a little newer, don't know if the collar has to be machined for a newer bearing or if there is just a good replacement bearing?
thanks,
Mike

You might consider speaking to the two of the larger suppliers of parts for our Packards. Kanter 800-526-1096, or Max Merritt 800-472-2573. They would respond to this question all the time and will know the correct answer. Both are good people...Call and speak to them...Don't just go on line...Most of their knowledge is NOT on line...Ernie in Arizona

Mike, why not simply just buy a new replacement for the bearing that's currently installed?

Good evening Mike,

In searching the site for info, I found your post regarding a throw-out bearing. I’m in need of one for my ‘54 convertible and I’m told it is a 1686-1, but I am unable to locate one. I’ve also seen they are no longer made/available! Would you mind advising where you found yours? I plan on calling Merritt and Kanter tomorrow, but I’m assuming you did not go to them?!

Thanks for your help!1

Mark

Do you have the part number on it? You may be able to buy one by matching dimensions.

Good afternoon:

I procured a new bearing and collar combination from Merritt, but as FYI, it is NOT the same bearing as the original 1686-1 bearing. The new bearing itself is thicker and the collar has been modified to accommodate the new bearing ID dimension.

AND, head’s up to anyone that might be buying one from Merritt’s in the near future. The collar on the item I received has a missing hole on one of the tabs to which you attach one of the springs. Apparently an oversight on the part of their supplier. I’m going to chat with them tomorrow so they can check their stock.

FINALLY, what is the consensus of the group on whether there should be 1 or 2 springs (1 on each of the 2 tabs) attached to the collar and transmission housing. The parts manual indicates only 1 spring per car not 2? Why 2 tabs with only 1 spring?
