Self adjusting brakes?

I'm having some brake issues I just had new shoes put on the front of the 56 clipper coupe, they seem to have developed greater stoping power on one side than the other, causing turning of the car when the wheel is released when stepping on the brakes. So my question is was the car the sort where the brakes adjust when backing up and stopping the car?

Packard had no self-adjusting mechanism so either the brakes were not properly installed/adjusted or there is a fluid leak that has gotten onto the shoes and drum.

Also be sure that the shop has re-arced the shoes for the drums. If not, they may be contacting only on a small surface of the shoe rather than on the whole thing.
