The internal hose is quite well protected and are often in great shape unless there has been severe internal leakage. But worth checking.

I don’t think you can put too much assembly grease in it and no amount could possibly make it stick.

Clean out the canister and polish up the inside with Scotchbrite using an up and down motion as opposed to going roundy round.

Slap your piston back in and loosen all of the screws that hold the top plate a turn or two. Wiggle the piston back and forth a bit then retighten the screws. Take some fairly light oil and oil the wick around the leather seal with that. The piston must spring back when released.
