Looks to have an overdrive transmission attached, if I understand correctly. High bid is $22, in Wisconsin.

It seems to have an odd u-joint flange on the transmission. Which years used that square type? I don’t recall seeing it before.

Because of the front motor mount it has to be pre 51 so not a 50s engine in the actual year of car it came out of sense.

The distributor is slightly forward of center so not the 356 and probably is the 288. It has a post war EC and placement of the coil on the engine, along with the R9 OD means most likely it is early 22nd series. The square flange is used with the Spicer U joints so maybe go thru the parts manual and find which models used that U joint to narrow it farther.

The spicer joints on Packard transmissions I have of the era are more rectangular than this, which appears almost square. Although this Dana rear end shown is not Packard, it is in a Packard and mates with the same type of u-joint where the shape is identical to those I have on transmissions.

I guess there is more than one version. Not sure which models used this configuration.

I don’t believe that the Spicer type was used before 1951 which was part of the flange and the one I showed was apparently the Mechanics type which is the only type I’ve ever seen on a pre-1951 Packard! Even my 1939 with R6 overdrive had this type.

The Spicer illustration with square flange is from the 46-50 SM, chassis section.

When I was proofing the driveline group in the Parts Listing database, I saw mention of Spicer and Mechanics u-joints but, other than the 1951-1954 type, this is the first I saw one in situ as it were. My own 1948 transmission doesn’t have it so must be model-dependant which might be another clue about the engine.
