Dave, I used Shell Rotella and CCCA's Classic Car Motor Oil in the 15W-40 weight in the engines of my 37, 47 and 55 Packards. Transmission and Overdrive 85W-140 GL-1 gear oil. Differential same weight, but a GL-5 rated oil. Don't put GL-1 in the differential. Others here will most likely have other suggestions.

Has anyone used Valvoline VR1? It is available in multi-weight and single weight. The Zinc content is 1400ppm and Phosphorus is 1300ppm.

With the very modest tappet-to-cam loadings typical of the flathead Packard engines, we're told by many lubricant authorities that the zinc and phosphorous are of no particular benefit. With an engine in good condition and clean internally, I'd just go with a good name-brand detergent oil with a viscosity suitable for the temperatures you expect to encounter.

Agree with O-D. One more kick at this dead horse - Lucas makes a line of high zinc engine oils in multiple viscosities.

John,
FWIW that's what I use and what was recommended by the machine shop that rebuilt my engine. Chris.

It's generally always on the warmer side here in Louisiana. I always use Lucas 30 weight zinc impregnated oil in the engine, motor seems to love it. Bit hard to find sometimes and a little more expensive, but definitely saves wear on engine parts.

Engines I have known and loved. Driven. I have noticed that the ones which used the least oil all ran on thinner oil, and the other spec'd thicker oil. Ergo, my tendency, come oil change time, will be to err to lower viscosity.

Your cardiologist put you on blood thinners because thinner blood is easier to pump, right? Think about it . . . .

If you're not having fun, maybe it's your own damned fault.
