Hello. My first Packard was delivered today, a 1936 Super Eight 1404 Club Sedan. It is in good condition but needs a service. Could you please tell me if the oil filter is a disposable type or if it is a metal strainer that can be washed? I don't want to drain the oil and then find I need a replacement element that is not available in Europe.

The original factory filter was a sealed unit, Purolator L-8, a full-flow disposable unit. Its very highly unlikely your car still has an original unit; the modern reproduction units look like the OEM unit externally but disassemble with a modern common spin-on unit inside. There were several vendors making reproduction replacements and they used differing approaches, you'll have to examine the unit on your car to see just which type you have, and that will determine how to proceed with a fresh filter. However, you can still complete an oil change without the need to change the filter.

Additionally, above the access plate in the oil pan there is a removable mesh screen to periodically clean, it serves to protect the oil pump intake.

Thank you very much for this clarification. For the time being I will just change the oil, which can't do any harm.

I am used to a prewar Rolls-Royce, which just has a strainer so I will clean that in the Packard. Its condition will give an indication of what the disposable filter is like.

Thank your for the offer of the unused set up. I will consider what needs to be done.
