This is what the heat riser valve looks like from different angles (NOS).

An all too common issue with the heat riser valves is the casting holding the valve flapper is broken.

I hope this isn't the case but when I felt around tv he heat riser section when the car was idling leak leak was really big.

I already got my new exhaust manifold seal set. What side of gasket goes against the manifold? The Raised dimple side or flat side? Same question for the black heat riser gasket. Thanks for the help!

GAS TANK QUESTION

The last owner only rinsed out the gas tank swashing around nuts and bolts, he put a inline fuel filter in under the car next to the tank and it is filled with rust dust/sludge. So now I want to get the gas tank in order before I rebuild the carb.

I just spoke with a "Gas Tank Renu" company close to me in Los Angeles but it will cost $950 bucks for the whole process. (soak, sand blast, coat, bake)
Just to get it deep cleaned will cost $375. I will check a few local radiator shops to see if they are any different for a good cleaning. Just wanted to see what anyone else has done. Thanks

I am surprised the Renu amount is that high but I guess everything is high out here. Even the recently announced 40-50 repro tanks are less than that Renu quote. For half the Renu amount or a little over the price of the deep clean you can get a new 51-56 repro tank.

I can't remember the vendor name offhand but do a search on the forum as there are several recent threads on 51-6 tanks that mention the name of the company selling them. That is the route I would go.

Renu actually cuts the tank open to do the blasting, then welds it shut again. I had to have a similar process done on my 1965 Cadillac as reproductions are not available but in your case, you can buy a brand new tank so no need for all that. You could also try Hirsch’s tank sealer kit.

Don't bother trying to fix the old tank. Just get a new one. There are new reproductions available for '51-56 Packards. They all used the same tank.

Auto City Classics: https://www.autocityclassic.com/51-56%20Packard%20Tank%20TS5156PK

I believe Kanter has them too. Pretty sure both come from the same supplier in Taiwan. $450 is a good price for a brand new tank, fresh metal, fresh paint on the outside, and zero problems with rust and fouled fuel. Just buy the tank, rebuild the carb, and plan to rebuild the fuel pump (if it hasn't already been done). Then you'll essentially have all new fuel parts (except for the main line) and will never have to worry about fuel again.

On that note, get a new sender with the tank. But be sure to test the float on it first. I have a new sender but it has never worked right, and I've done all the proper tests and grounds. I believe my float has a leak in it. Best to check it all before hand. Dropping the tank over and over again is not fun.

Ya I think I am going to go the new route, I called Kanter they can get me a new tank for $500 plus $60 for shipping and that does not include the filler neck that is just the tank. The Auto City Classic one is looking like a pretty good deal right now! That one comes with neck and vent tube right?

Although I’ve not yet tried it, I bought a fuel line cleaner from Eastwood for my 1951 Henney-Packard. If the tank is dirty, likely the lines are too and I don't want to simply blow them out with air!

Looks like the filler neck on the Auto Cuty Classic one needs some work , look in the link to old thread below. Do you know if this has been worked out?

Riki received his new tank a short while ago and posted some photos on one of his blogs.
