According to the "Decoder", it's a 320. Which is correct for a 1934 Limo.

Good find....
4.69's. If I were keeping the car, I'd try to afford a lower ratio...cheap though....rare part/rare buyer. Not a big market for this stuff....

Thanks for that. being from Yorkshire in the UK I'm all for saving money! However on this occasion I'll take the advice of Flackmaster and go for the improved gear ratio at the same time. I understand it's very important the parts are fitted properly. Should I be looking to replace bearings/seals at the same time and if so, are they available?

If you already have it apart, I'd replace all seals and inspect and repack or replace any bearings as needed.

It's a job you once want to do once in your lifetime.

Please understand that I am a life member of The Church of the Holy Overdrive, which is how I think the majority of people overcome ancient tall gearing. I don't know if the aforementioned follow-on to the Phil Bray enterprise even makes the gears you wish to have - please post that information when you find out so others will know. Setting up a ring and pinion setup I would categorize as a job which must be done right the first time, so bear that in mind whether you find new gears, or jump on the set on ebay. Hundred bucks indeed a giveaway price.
....and for overdrives, any google search for "gear vendors overdrives" will put you on the path...as many classic era owners - not just Packards, have adapted.

Is there a way to tell what the ratio is without taking apart the rear axle?

Since the two shafts (axle and pinion) are interconnected by fixed gearing, you can determine the ratio by rotating one of them a known number of rotations and observing the resultant rotations of the other. Use the search function to find the particulars, the method has been described here many times.

And many differential assemblies have the final ratio stamped somewhere on the case or on a metal tag affixed to the case.
