As far as I know, the 1951 and later models didn't have the additional strap between the engine and the frame.

Prewar, the battery ground strap went to the frame and then another went from frame to transmission and engine. Postwar, Packard was not very consistent with grounds and for the most part they were haphazard at best.. All models had the battery ground cable connect to the block with whatever ground path between the engine and body or frame coming thru the generator to body/regulator ground wire or thru various metal to metal linkages or assorted touching connections. Any actual wired body to engine ground connections were probably done by a dealer or owner.

For the 55-56 models Packard finally added a small properly connected braided ground strap between the engine and the firewall. IMO, it would not hurt to pick up a 10ga braided ground strap from Napa and add it between the engine and body on any other postwar model.

Update your cables and stick with 6 volts, it’s best for the long run.

An 8-volt conversion is just a plain old fashioned mongrelization. A bad idea, period. Find and correct the original problem and your 6-volt system will perform without problems.
