You don't want to run a generator without a regulator. Three brush generators can destroy themselves if they are run at normal speeds with no load and the field terminal grounded. With the field terminal UNGROUNDED, there should be no problem, other than that the generator will not charge.

Only grounded the field terminal long enough to confirm that the voltage regulator was the issue and not the generator - have not been running the car with the ground wire any longer than it took to check the amp gauge.

I did the light tap with a screwdriver handle test you suggested today and it started charging again - so a rebuild of the voltage regulator will be happening soon.
