What is this seal called that's between my trunk pan and fender? (It's stapled to the trunk pan.) What is the modern day equivalent, and where can I get it? This is on my 53 Cavalier.

I used a universal trunk seal from metro molded rubber. Used a continuous pc to go up & around along the quarter panel.
Not an exact fit, you may have to trim it in narrow spots
Not home right now but I can send you the part number this evening

I ordered these 2 sizes LP-58-A & B

for a tack strip I ordered from Langley Old Car center in BC

TS-45983-A 1/2"X3/16"X15' TACK STRIP, you can call them for the particular size you need, this one was a semi flexible plastic type material

Isn't that "seal" just the rope-like packing wedged between the fender and pan? It's different from the rubber trunk seal between the body and the trunk lid.

I believe that's been discussed somewhere here before in the past.

Yes it is different than the rubber seal for the trunk lid. This seal has fibres and more of a tar like substance than a rubber seal. Also different from that big soft fibre "snake" that is stuffed between the fender and wheel well.

The seal I'm referring to was attached to the trunk floor pan, and would have been done before the fenders would have been installed as it is stapled to the flange of the pan. Whatever I use for a seal will get messed up in a couple of places when welding, I'll have to go back and seal those up.

I don't remember the diameter of the rope like seal used in the fender well area but if something like that is needed there is a 3/4" diameter cotton braided wick material that looks a lot like the original seal and comes in various lengths. It might work if it would be large enough. Soaking the wicking in a solution of thinned down liquid asphalt like a pavement crack sealant and letting that get fairly dry before installing would mimic the original stuff and would also provide some water resistance..

The 'ropes' in my '54 are about 32"long and approximately 1 1/2" diameter. The material appears to be something like crepe paper, with an over braid of lacing cord. One end is wound with a string, but I think that was adding later to stop the fraying. See photos

The seal on my 56 is definitely not a rope/fibre
Some type of foam, hence my choice
Took a while to find it but here’s a photo
