Rear axle seals and bearings

When installing the new rear oil seals and repacking the bearings on my 1940 110 sedan I had no trouble on the left side but the right side axle did not go into the socket as far as originally placed leaving the bearing projecting minutely beyond the axle socket. Can I ad another shim to solve this problem?

Check the manual for the specified end play.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/archi ... tent.php?op=&catID=10&ContentID=383

In this case, it is 4 to 7 thou which is the same thru 55.

Tap the axle in with a hammer to make sure the opposite side bearing is seated, then pull it firmly, to check the end play.

The end play is easily read with an indicator as shown. If it is off, then add or subtract shims as needed.

I took the rear backing plate off all the way to the axle socket being careful to remember how it goes back together w/ pictures. when I got it all back together the axle would not turn. As in my original post the axle did not seem to go in as far as it should. That is why I asked if I should add more shims.

I can pretty well guarantee that the axles did not get longer, so there must be something else wrong. Most likely the new inner seals need to be driven in further; they are holding the bearing out.
