On August 25, 2009 a 103 year old speed record fell today.

At Edwards Air Force Base on Tuesday a British built car powered by a steam engine set a new world record for steam powered vehicles. The new record being 139.832 mph breaking the 1906 of 127 mph. The old record of 127 was set by Fred Marriott driving a Stanley Steamer at Daytona Beach in 1906.

Below is a picture of the new record holder and the second picture is of the Stanly Steamer from 1906.

I don't know how proud of that new record I would be. 100+ years of technology, space-age materials, and wind tunnel tested aerodynamics, all to beat the record by 12 MPH! Seems a litle anti-climatic to me.

(I bet Turbopacman could tweak it up to at least 150)

I'd think just by dropping a streamliner body on the Stanley it'd break it's own record!

I agree. We had steam trains in the 30's and 40's that regularly went over 100 mph. Perhaps someone needs to rethink how to build a steam engine.

Breaking this record by only 13mph is kind of like winning a competition for being the tallest little person.

Insignificant record breaking! I agree too. Just compare the SIZE of the two cars to each other. The size difference makes the speed difference even less significant.

The Stanley wasn't exactly what one would call a Streamliner. Close to the aerodynamics of a brick. I wonder what the rated HP of each are.

I think the most aamazing thing is that record stood for over 100 years. Give the persons credit who put the effort forth to break that record.

Just think the Brits and Aussies hold the top speed record on land and on water.

I could probably power it from all the hot air generated from this website!
