Source for a throw out bearing

Does anybody have a source for a throwout bearing for a 38 std 8? Kanter and Merritt both want about $100. I just got a clutch disk and pressure plate at a local transmission shop for $165 where Kanter wants $300 for the same thing. Hopefully there is another source for the bearing.

When you say a 38 std 8, do you mean a 38 Eight (a/k/a "120")?

You can find the OEM bearing # from Hollanders and most probably pick one up in any good bearing shop. Do you know the OEM #? I can look it up if you can't.

I don't have a direct answer to your question but I can't resist tossing my two cents worth into this discussion.

I don't think Kanter and the other big three manufacture anything. I think we pay too high a price to compensate them only because they know where to buy the parts. Between two and three times what the part should cost. For instance they ask $39.00 for a wheel cylinder you can buy new at the NAPA dealer for $14.00. I'll bet that when they get an order for a wheel cylinder they run down to the NAPA dealer and buy it. Maybe that is why when you place an order it takes them sometimes two weeks before the part is shipped.

Don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with someone making a profit but 278% is a little much.

The tranny shop (Portland Transmission) I went to has a very large parts dept and they couldn't cross reference the old bearing number. And yes it is a Packard 8 (usually called the 120 except in 38).

Had my local clutch shop call there supplier and was told that bearing is proprietary .I also wouln't pay the price.
I had the machine shop cut the collar down($35.00) by 30 thou and use a late model bearing.

A quick web browse shows that Pontiac used the #7109 as a pilot bearing as recently as the late 60s. GM part # is 15533265. 1.3780 OD x 0.5906 ID x 0.3543 width.

Bingo, you hit the nail on the head. That's why I say that knowledge is power. And it's easier on the wallet!
