Does anyone know of a source where I can get new field coils for a 1929 Packard Owen-Dyneto Generator.

Thanks,

I suspect finding truely NEW ones as you ask will be extremely difficult. Easier to take pot luck on a used winding from used generator. Also there are quite a few places that can rewind your field cores.

You might also consider checking the parts books to see which other O-D generators used the same field windings, I suspect there is quite a bit of interchange. Here's a listing of other generators as possible donors.

7th series all CD-840
826/833 CL-896
840/845 DN-860
9th series all CL-1005
1001-1002 CL-1005
1003-1004 CL-1130
11th series all CO-1177 or high output CO-1240
12th series all CO-1240
14th series all CO-1300

This generator & O-D field winding# list from Chiltons, perhaps Packard Parts books or better yet the A.E.A. books should be consulted to verify. I don't have a 6th series parts book handy for the 6th series information, but it should be an easy find. Sorry I couldn't be of more specific help.

CD-840 field winding O-D #23111
CL-896 #23223
DN-860 # 23233
CL-1005 #23233 superceeded by 23488
CL-1033 #23488
CO-1130 #23573
CO-1240 #23573

Just ran across the O-D part# for the field winding for a CD-840, it's #23111 so it may or may not interchange with the later units, but the part# is different. I added this info to the above post just to keep all the information together.

My parts book says that there were three generators used for the 626/633/640/645 models. They were the CD-777, CD-800 and CD-840. It mentions that the CD-800 differs from the CD-777 only in the cutout and cutout mounting. It doesn't say what the difference between the CD-840 is and the others. It shows that the field coil OD23111 was used for the 800 and 840, but is unclear on whether the same was used for the 777. There is a field coil shown as OD 22760, but not its application.

I have three generators, 2 CD-840s and one CD-678, which is shown as applying to 2nd, 3rd and 4th series cars. It used an OD22433 field coil.

I have looked locally for a shop that can rewind field coils to no avail. Don't want to cannibalize one of the generators unless absolutely necessary. Can you give me contact info for a shop that can do it?

Thanks,

Jim Wayman

Jim, if you browse the printed hobby media like Hemmings, you should come up with plenty of possible sources to rewind a field. Here's a couple, I have no experience with any of them, hence no recommendation, though Ace in Wichita may be rather better known that the others and I've seen a couple of complete restored units they did.

Burton L. Norton Co.
Grand Rapids, MI
616-677-1208

Precision Power
Lansing, MI
800-794-5962

Ace Alternator
Wichita, KS
239-821-6548

Alternator/Starter Exchange
Nashville, TN
615-254-4900

And others.
