1940 Senior Tag Light lenses

When I acquired my 180 recently, it came with two extra tag light lenses. Looking at them other day, two questions arose:

1. Which is preferable, the red with amber or the clear white?

2. The red shows signs of having a silverish highlight (paint?) over the PACKARD letters. Is that correct?

Hi Martin, to the best of my knowledge the 40 Super 8 with luggage rack gets the clear lens. You might take a look in the parts book and see if it denotes which. Perhaps the red was an option, I'm not sure. Nice you have both to choose from.

It also could have been a state law thing. Certain states may have prohibited a clear lens on the rear of a car, and so the red one may have been used instead. But this is just speculation on my part.

39Super8 is partially correct. Actually, the 180 with luggage rack would have the "clear" lens WITHOUT the word Packard. So neither are correct, except that the customer is always right in the world of Packard.

I've just learned that your red lens is for 1938, the "clear" one is for 1939. The correct lens for 1940 should be clear, and without "PACKARD."

Thanks.

And Ugh!

Anyone want to trade a nice 1939 clear OR nice 1938 red/amber for the correct 1940?

I'll keep my eye out for you Martin. Sometimes they show up in the Dayton museum.
