Packards1 Do you have a picture of the 400 4BBL air cleaner with decal, mine is missing and I would like to see where it's supposed to be.

Correction Dept:

Just looked at the PI Judging Guide again. Only 51-54 are black below the drip rail. 55-56s are body color.


From the Guide:

Fender Panels

Fender Panels that are removable are gloss black. One piece, or part of the fender are body color except 1951-1954 which are gloss black below the drip-rail. 1955-56 are primary fender body color.

Interesting pics... and I find it curious that the two different scotish heather cars pictured have the sides in black, same as my scotish heather car.

One other thing that caught my attention is the heater hoses. At least one car has orange heater hoses, same as my car. How are they supposed to be?

One additional doubt I have: vaccuum line in the dual carb car. I believe it comes out of the rear of the front carb, but would love to see how it is supposed to go, as I will be making a new one and would like it to be as correct as possible.

The only sure way to really and truly know is to look at an original, untouched car and see what they're like. And every original, untouched car I've ever seen had the firewall and fender wells painted body color.

Believe the red heater hose is aftermarket.

Am reasonably sure based on all those with untouched cars that the side splasher would be body color. Interesting there are several with black though. Wonder if there was work done and a touch up in black was made since that was done prior to 55 or possibly early cars might have had black. Guess one would have to correlate those with black splashers with serial numbers to rule that out.

Here are a few picts of the vacuum lines. The front carb supplies the wipers/washer from the rear port on base and runs down side of head to engine rear and then hose to the balance valve. Rear carb supplies the dist from side port and brakes from rear. The dist tube is a loop around the carb and then comes in the vacuum advance with a 90 degree elbow from below.

EDIT: A picture from service counselor looks like the wiper tube off front carb rear port runs above the choke heat tubes over to head instead of under as my car does on first 2 picts

I have a 5677a that has 34000 miles on it the wheel side of the fender apron is gloss black when the undercoating is removed and all metal in the engine bay is body color

The decal is absolutely correct on Packard1's photo, and knowing the car, and how untouched it is we would expect nothing less. There is a picture above, one of the E-bay pics where the decal is on the side of the air cleaner, Wrong! another Ebay car has a Packard crest there, Wrong.
