So I'm planning to get a backup lamp for my 1949 Deluxe Eight and need to know how to and where to install it. My car did not previously have this accessory so I don't know how to install it on the back of the car. Thanks a lot!

The factory switch was on a bracket at the end of steering column and generally was a 2 terminal switch on cars with light only and no OD or on those with early R9 ODs if the lockout mod was never made and on the R11s. The 4 terminal sw was used on later R9 ODs with the reverse lockout. If you have the R9 with lockout, the unused reverse switch part should be there already. If not, what you wind up with will depend more on the kit you find or buy.

There may be more than one style but one I've seen mounts to the gravel shield in front of bumper via about a 5/16 hole.


EDIT: Thanks to BDeB for showing the correct one. The bracket on the one I show does look a little crude for Packard. It does allow mounting on either plane so may be aftermarket. It came off a car of that era but could have been added by anyone--even a dealer using one of his own choice instead of the factory unit.

I have one on my '47 but don't have the switch mechanism or bracket that attaches to the steering column down by the shift levers so the light only goes on in reverse. I believe there is a diagram of one in the 46-50 service manual overdrive section as the switch also served to lockout the Overdrive when in reverse. Maybe your car if equipped with overdrive has the switch and bracket already and all you will need if a power wire? If you don't have one of those you might use a toggle under the dash etc.

P.S. HH56 beat me to it! Gosh he's fast!

Dave, I'm sorry to beat you on this one but you beat me to the other post on the fuel compensator.

If I had the brain cells turned on, would have posted the switch part here with the text and locations pics first time but seem to do things in spurts these days. Just now added the pic of a light and mounting bracket.

The 22nd and 23rd Series backup lights mounted on the panel below the trunk lid. Thread size is 7/16" so the hole diameter needs to be slightly larger.

Yeah, I actually have the R-11 OD. Don't know if there's a reverse switch or not. Probably not considering the car never had a backup lamp beforehand.
