I am new to this website, but I recently acquired a piece of original artwork by an artist named Thomas Hoyne featuring what I believe is a 1930 Packard automobile.

In addition to the car there is a picture of Bobby Jones (the golfer) holding a trophy which is indicative of his winning the Grand Slam of Golf (which happened in 1930) as well as a picture of a woman (perhaps Marion Davies who was Wm. Randolph Hearst's mistress and the richest woman in Hollywood in 1930. The house that is pictured may also be her 1st Beverly Hills mansion.

Finally there is a picture of a racing airplane (maybe "the Mystery Plane") one model of which was rumored to have a Packard engine that powered it.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this. It may have been artwork for a calendar or poster, but it doesn't look like any of the ads I have seen from that time.

Thanks for your help and interest.

Doug Johnson

Not easy. Perhaps a 1930 740, 745 or even a 734 but neither of them has a side window with such a shape and frame. Feel invited to make nonsense of my working hypothesis.

Edit: On second thought it could be a 1931.

Actually, 1931 or later would make more sense since Bobby Jones would have to win 4 tournaments in calendar year 1930 to gain the notoriety and be pictured as the winner of the Grand Slam.

As a matter of fact, I did look through all pics from 1930, 1931, & 1932. The car appears to be closest in looks to the 1931 Phaetons. I cannot find any ads, however, that look like the artwork I posted.

Maybe it was produced for a dealer calendar or some other promo item. I would also like to know more about the airplane that is pictured.

Thanks,

DJ

That looks very much like the plane. I wonder whether it was powered by a Packard engine or just included to signify the latest in performance technology?

I will be away from the computer so no more responses for 3 days.
