Hello all

I am new to the forum, do any contributors have pictures on accurately detailing a 1940-120 engine? I have read some of the various other forums & input and would like accurate information. What colors are used where on this motor, I already have the Bill Hirsch green on the block. What finish is applied to the manifolds, what is plated,?
I will also be looking for small items that somehow disappeared.
Thank you

Fred D.

Fred,

Welcome to the site. You'll find a lot of friendly Packard people here more than willing to share their experience and knowledge. Unfortunately I cannot help with your query but I'm sure someone else will.

If you haven't already could you add your '40 to the Owner Registry please together with a picture and history, if known?

Again -

For the engine, and most items in the engine compartment, I recommend you get a copy of the Packards International Engine compartment judging guide. This has lots of pictures and helps to break down the finish on all the different bit and pieces.

Thanks for the replies I have the guide and what confuses me is that it says we will accept finishing in flat black and that stove black is also a good finish to keep rust off the casting. I have seen pictures of black, silver, cast blast, semi gloss & rust, the intake and the exhaust also being different colors. I am hoping to get it correct the first time. I hope to start putting this back together in the near future. I do have the wire loom, horn bracket, and the air cleaner finished in a semi glosss black. The distributor, starter, generator, are also done in a semi gloss black. I do need to get the natural finish on the pulley nut for the generator.

Thanks again
Fred D.

P.S. Kev this is a great site thanks for all the fine work. I hope to provide some tech stuff for you in the future.

I think the exhaust is supposed to be natural (Cast Gray). But flat black or stovepipe black is acceptable. I painted both manifolds on my motor with Hi-Temp Cast Gray from Bill Hircsh.

So they have that natural finish, but wont rust right back up.

I my opinion, I think it looks odd then one of the manifolds is painted and the other one is not.

Thanks for the relies. I got a can of the cast blast and am almost ready to give a go.
