A possibility of using some red laquer or enamel paint and cut it to the SG required????

BEFORE the gauge was disassembled, did the ORIGINAL fluid fade????? What color did it fade too????

Carbon Tetrachloride has a density of 1.58, acetylene tetrabromide is 2.85.

The key that makes the gauge work is the high density liquid in the glass tube.

Previous post explaining why Marvel Mystery Oil would not work explains it further.

I was thinking more along the lines of using the carbontet- or the paint as a dye rather than for the fluid itself. In a previous post u indicated that:

" I also tried using red food coloring, without good results."

Red food coloring is water miscible. Not sure what your poor results were but if it mixxed just fine and fade was a problem then maybe try some blood as a dye.

What kind of red dye is used in thermometers??? Maybe.

Sample dyed with Sudan Red dye has spent it's second week in the sun, no fading.

Testing can be summarized as:

Used acetylene tetra-bromide liquid in the hydrostatic gauges of 2.85 - 2.95 density, dye the fluid with Sudan Red dye. The gauge will be accurate and the red gauge fluid will not fade.

Hoping this twelve year old thread can be momentarily revived.

Assuming the KS gauge fluid one buys nowadays from outfits like Straight Eight still fades like it did in the past, I am thinking of dyeing the fluid with Sudan Red and am wondering which Sudan Red dye was used - there are several. Perhaps it was Sudan Red #1 ?

Also curious as to whether the dye held fast over the years. Still red?

All - 2023 update
The acetylene tetra bromide sample I dyed with Sudan #2 dye lasted for about 2 years before finally turning a light amber.

I've been researching other heavy liquids (the density has to be around 2.85 to 2.96 g/ml) for the gauge to read accurately.

So far I haven't run across one that is the right density and as stable as the original fluid used. The attached .pdf lists some of the fluids I've looked at.
