Engine sludge?

I was cleaning off the block to put my oil pan back on, and the passenger side rear wall of the block, just above an oil drain hole, there was a lot of build up. To me it looked like carbon mixed with oil, but it was right next to the rear main bearing.
Anyone else seen anything like that on these motors? I don't have a picture, because I didn't think to take one until it was all cleaned out. Thanks!

Ken,
Was the buildup in the vicinity of the road draft tube inlet inside the block? My thoughts are that combustion blow-by resulting from worn rings might contribute to what you observed. Attach file: (54.96 KB)

Mal,
That was exactly where it was! I'll look tomorrow to verify the breather tube is there. I think it probably is. Your picture threw me for a second- it took a second or two to remember that a RHD drive car would have a RH master cylinder! Nice looking motor! Thanks for the tip.
