There are different styles of switches. No idea if yours is original. Here are a couple of examples. On the first, the headlight switch incoming would go to the bottom terminal labeled B, on the second the headlight switch would go to the offset terminal as schematically drawn. On the third, it would go to the top terminal with two rivets.

Most dimmer switches will have some kind of label on one terminal-- A "1", or maybe a "B" for bat, or "C" for common or with terminals riveted together (this top switch has both label and 2 terminals connected together) or else one of the terminals will be differently shaped & maybe offset from the other two. The bottom picture of a universal switch has no label I can see but does have two terminals riveted together.

Those labeled, riveted or different terminals would take the incoming from headlight switch. The two wires going on to the lights doesn't care which of the remaining they go on.

Thanks for the great info, but I guess I am still very confused. My switch is very similar to your first photo. There are no markings anywhere, not even a "B" like what is shown in the photo. My wiring diagrams all show these wires as going to posts 1, 2 & 3 with 2 wires going to post 1. Any more help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

OK, using the 48-9 22nd series schematic, 15-WGX comes from headlight switch and would go to one of terminals mentioned above; 8-G & 16-GBK combo is the high beam to lights (8-G) and (16-GBK) is to the dash high beam indicator so both on one of either of other terminals; 7-BR is low beam to lights so the remaining terminal.

OK, I think I got it. Because my switch is just like your first photo, I will assume that my post with the double rivets is "B". And I can choose for myself which of the other posts go where? I can put the double wire to one post, and the single wire to the other with no worries?
