Ahooga Horn

My 1930 7-45 has what appears to be the original horn.

I am always disappointed that the sound is not the "traditional" Ahooga! sound that one associates with the era.

Silly question maybe but what sound did the horn make when new. It occured to me that if the orginal mechanism broke it may have been replaced with a more modern sounder inside the casing.

What would you think about changing the innards so that it makes the Ahooga! sound? Sacrilage or not?

Ahooga sound is generally associated with Ford Model A's and other inexpensive cars. Personally I'd find it an affront to the Packard name to have such a sound. Just my opinion - keep it authentic.

I had an Ahooga horn AND a vacuum wolf whistle on my '54 Ford... but it was 1962 and I was a teenager with questionable taste. Every time I used the whistle... the engine faltered. Very classy .

Dear kts:

The horn in the picture is absolutley correct for the 7th series.

I understand your disappointment because it is just a low tone beep beep. In the old days the late George Jepson was the principal supplier of genuine musical horns for Packards.

I remember once he pulled into the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point Long Island and absolutely floored the personnel when he blew the horn on his Boattail Packard.

"Did that car just play Anchors Aweigh?!!! It did! Holy Cow!"

The Klaxon horn (ahooogah) was used on the sixth series and if a customer wanted the dealer would change it I'm sure.

Tim, though I never installed it on my 34, George Jepson repaired and gave me a Sparton 4-tone horn back in the 60s. It plays "How dry I am". A fine gentleman, George; it was passing his garage in Hillsdale as a youngster that probably got me interested in this hobby, and Packards in particular. I spent many enjoyable hours with George and Bea.
